Today's Satyamev Jayate episode focused on those with disabilities, and how in India, a disability is either regarded as a sin or as suffering in payment for a terrible past life. Everywhere else, however, this thought process does not exist. The stories he highlighted touched the heart, as each individual recounted his or her own battle and ultimate success despite (or perhaps because of) their disabilities. The episode culminated with this fantastic performance by Ability Unlimited (see their Facebook page).
As a classically trained Indian dancer, as well as dancer of many other styles, I salute them, and respect them so much. You hear stories of almost-blind ballerinas who dance listening to the pounding of the beats of the music, or faint gradation of shadows around them. But this, for me, is something else entirely, I think partially because in India the disabled have a much harder time even getting around or going to school, let alone performing on a stage so magnificently. Moments like this I feel so incredibly proud of my culture and my country, despite it's many flaws; aisa des hai mera.
I have to watch this now. But really appreciated your thoughts .. You go girl!
